The first problem with free consultations relates to each party`s strategies to interfere with the other party`s ability to retain counsel. Often, a party meets with lawyers for consultations aimed at creating a conflict, so the opposing party is unable to talk to lawyers to whom his spouse has already spoken. Spouses will actively consult with the best divorce lawyers in their area, only to deny the other party their most important decisions for representation.

These opportunities do not create fairness for the client or the lawyer who offers advice in the hope of helping people. Charging counselling fees limits a person`s ability to look around just to prevent the other spouse from maintaining quality representation. This is the only responsible way to give legal advice. A lawyer who offers free legal advice does not offer this level of professionalism and usually does so out of desperation for clients. Experienced and established lawyers who don`t have to “run” cases usually don`t. Typically, time is of the essence in these areas, so paid consultations can also ensure you receive timely advice. While free consultations are tempting, paid consultations have been shown to provide a much more complete analysis of your case, the quality of legal advice offered is otherwise lacking in free consultations.

If you have your legal advice, one of your main questions will be the lawyer`s background. Some people feel intimidated when they ask about it, but the truth is that you will pay a lot of money for services. You wouldn`t hire an electrician who has never done wiring, so it`s wise to ask about the lawyer`s experience. You can check the basics on the firm`s website before the appointment, which will save you time. You may want to ask how many such cases the lawyer has handled. For example, how many divorces has this lawyer pronounced in the past year? A lawyer who has done one or two does not have much experience. You may want to ask how long the lawyer has been practicing as a lawyer and how long they have been practicing in your county or region, which will give you an idea of the lawyer`s familiarity with local judges and procedures. It`s usually not very helpful to ask where the lawyer went to law school, as you can find this information online and it often doesn`t tell you anything useful anyway. Instead, focus on the experience with your type of case. You can also ask about the average verdict the lawyer received in your type of case. Free legal answers – If you have a low income and qualify for the program, you can direct your civil law questions to the American Bar Association.

Most major family law firms in New Mexico charge lawyers an hourly rate for a consultation.

It`s usually between $200 and $300 an hour. This is not outrageous, but it is not necessary either. Family law is nuanced, but it`s not rocket science if you know what you`re talking about. A good lawyer can analyze the relevant facts of your case, show you your options, and give you meaningful legal advice without wasting your money for an hour. That`s why Genus Law offers 30-minute consultations at $75.00 that begin the process of resolving your problem without wasting your money. Another important part of choosing a lawyer is determining how the firm handles and handles your case. In large law firms, it`s common for other lawyers to work on the case, so the people actually working on your case may not be the person you meet first. Most lawyers have paralegals, or paralegals, who do much of the paperwork and planning, so you`ll want to know who the contact person for your case will be. You should also know how often you can expect to hear from the lawyer. If you have legal questions, how long will it take for you to get an answer when you call or email? How often will the lawyer or law firm contact you with updates? What do you do if something happens after work? What information and documents do you need to provide to the lawyer to ensure the proper conduct of the case? In order for a lawyer to provide legal advice, you must be a client.

Now, you could be a client on a very limited basis, but generally this agreement involves two things: The first is that representation is limited to what you are going to pay. Now, it is common practice for lawyers to enter into these limited agreements, as most lawyers maintain professional liability insurance based on insurance claims that require lawyers to only offer legal advice to their clients. This not only limits what lawyers can say during a free consultation, but also the type of advice they can give regarding your case. A malpractice carrier offers the lawyer protection for his or her clients. Lawyers do not want to be sued for legal advice, especially if they have advised a non-client who has not paid for the advice. This is probably the main reason why legal advice is not offered through free consultations. Generally, all questions about divorce or other families have different answers depending on the case, as there are many factors to consider. If you received and responded to legal advice, but then turned around and sued the lawyer for that advice, our malpractice will not protect us in these circumstances.

Legal advice can put lawyers at risk, so there are many lawsuits in place to protect their integrity and profession. If you get legal advice, you may not get the answer you were hoping for. This does not mean that the lawyer gave the wrong advice, but it is more likely that it is simply how the law is applied to the facts of your case. If this is the case, you can try to get a second opinion from another lawyer. For example, if you have a highly controversial and complex divorce and need the help of a lawyer, consider an expensive business.
