The first problem with free consultations relates to each party`s strategies to interfere with the other party`s ability to retain counsel. Often, a party meets with lawyers for consultations aimed at creating a conflict, so the opposing party is unable to talk to lawyers to whom his spouse has already spoken. Spouses will actively consult with the best divorce lawyers in their area, only to deny the other party their most important decisions for representation.
These opportunities do not create fairness for the client or the lawyer who offers advice in the hope of helping people. Charging counselling fees limits a person`s ability to look around just to prevent the other spouse from maintaining quality representation. You wouldn`t hire an electrician who has never done wiring, so it`s wise to ask about the lawyer`s experience. You can check the basics on the firm`s website before the appointment, which will save you time. You may want to ask how many such cases the lawyer has handled. For example, how many divorces has this lawyer pronounced in the past year? A lawyer who has done one or two does not have much experience. You may want to ask how long the lawyer has been practicing as a lawyer and how long they have been practicing in your county or region, which will give you an idea of the lawyer`s familiarity with local judges and procedures. It`s usually not very helpful to ask where the lawyer went to law school, as you can find this information online and it often doesn`t tell you anything useful anyway. Instead, focus on the experience with your type of case. You can also ask about the average verdict the lawyer received in your type of case. Free legal answers – If you have a low income and qualify for the program, you can direct your civil law questions to the American Bar Association.
Volunteer lawyers provide answers free of charge. They will not talk about criminal prosecution. We have found that people are often afraid of lawyers and what they charge for their services. There is a misconception about how much you have to pay for legal services from a law firm. In fact, there is so much misinformation that most people don`t realize that in many cases it is possible to get free and inexpensive legal aid. Whether your case involves personal injury law (such as a car accident), criminal law, commercial law, family law, etc., it`s best to always find a local lawyer who offers free consultations. While you should expect to pay for quality advice that will help you make an informed decision about your legal matter, you can always find ways to limit your expenses without sacrificing value. Most major family law firms in New Mexico charge lawyers an hourly rate for a consultation.
It`s usually between $200 and $300 an hour. This is not outrageous, but it is not necessary either. Family law is nuanced, but it`s not rocket science if you know what you`re talking about. A good lawyer can analyze the relevant facts of your case, show you your options, and give you meaningful legal advice without wasting your money for an hour. Lawyers do not want to be sued for legal advice, especially if they have advised a non-client who has not paid for the advice. This is probably the main reason why legal advice is not offered through free consultations. Generally, all questions about divorce or other families have different answers depending on the case, as there are many factors to consider. If you received and responded to legal advice, but then turned around and sued the lawyer for that advice, our malpractice will not protect us in these circumstances.
Legal advice can put lawyers at risk, so there are many lawsuits in place to protect their integrity and profession. If you get legal advice, you may not get the answer you were hoping for. This does not mean that the lawyer gave the wrong advice, but it is more likely that it is simply how the law is applied to the facts of your case.
