Legal Aid Society of Hudson Valley

The Orange County Legal Aid Society is based in Goshen and provides legal services to people accused of crimes and financially eligible adults in family court matters. The company is a non-profit corporation with a board of directors and is primarily funded by the county government. It has a team of 14 lawyers led by Chief Counsel, Gary Abramson. Legal Services of the Hudson Valley is the sole full-service civil service provider for the seven counties of the Hudson Valley, including Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan. When a crisis occurs and people who cannot afford a lawyer face legal problems due to job loss, illness or unfair denial of benefits, they often don`t know where to turn or where to get legal advice. These people often get lost in the justice system, thwarted by unknown procedures and confusing processes and documents. The chances of success are greatly increased if you have a lawyer by your side. We are proud of the positive results we can achieve for our customers. Did you receive 14 days` notice? Is it a rent claim or an eviction notice? What do you do next? Read our guide to help you navigate the legal system. Pro bono legal services are an important part of the association`s activities. The program is administered by Hudson Valley Legal Services. They provide legal services to families and individuals threatened with deportation, public services (federal and state), families and persons with disabilities and HIV-positive persons, and families with developmental children.

We are recipients of legal services funding for the region and provide a wide range of legal services to low-income individuals and families. Hudson Valley Legal Services` commitment to racial justice has always been a common thread running through our work. The pressure on our country and the world due to COVID-19 seems relentless. Add to that the pain of the last few weeks since the blatant murder of George Floyd and countless other black and brown people, and too many people in our communities are suffering and traumatic. As a legal service provider, we fight for equal justice for all. LSHV remains steadfast in its anti-racist commitment as we actively work for justice by providing services to those in need, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue to work in our communities and with our partners to reduce the injustices of systemic racism. We hope you will join us as we continue this fight. We provide support in the basic necessities of life, including: housing, foreclosure, domestic violence, public services, disability and consumers. In addition, in some counties, we have several specialized units for veterans, victims of domestic violence, LGBTQ people, people with AIDS/HIV, the elderly, children, and people receiving or seeking Medicaid long-term care services. Hudson Valley Legal Services is dedicated to working with skilled low-income individuals and families who could not turn to help anywhere else.

We determine who is financially eligible to receive our support using federal guidelines and specific eligibility criteria established by grants. The work we do every day does justice to thousands of our neighbours who have nowhere else to go.
