In California, radar detectors are legal, but the state has a say in their position (Minnesota too). In California, you can`t mount anything on the windshield, as this can obstruct visibility. If you have a radar detector in California, you need to mount it on the dashboard. If you get caught on the windshield, you can get a ticket. Laser jammers are also illegal in the Golden State. Similar to RADAR, there is a technology called “LIDAR” that is increasingly being used by law enforcement agencies to measure vehicle speed. To raise awareness among drivers about the use of this new technology, lidar detectors and laser jammers are now on the market. LIDAR detectors are generally not as effective as radar detectors because the emissions they look for are less frequent, more targeted, and more difficult to disperse than radars.
All of these reasons give the driver less time to react when their lidar detector warns them of a lidar device, or may not even detect the laser beam when pointed at a part of a vehicle where the sensor can`t detect it. Radar detectors and laser jammers are legal in New Jersey. However, radar detectors are not allowed in commercial vehicles in the Garden State, even if they weigh less than 10,000 pounds.
