Students who have a strong interest in a field of study outside of their major often opt for a minor program. The minor must complete 18 credit hours, of which at least 12 must be in the higher division. Each course must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00 on a scale of 4.00) or higher. Students who wish to specify a minor in urban planning should consult with advisors from their home college or school and the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning. Applicants must have an overall GAR of 2.0 or better to be considered for the program. Depending on a student`s bachelor`s degree program, prerequisite courses may be required to meet the requirements of that minor. It is the responsibility of each student to declare the minor through his main department or college and to obtain the necessary signatures from his department and the URP. The minor program prepares students for entry-level positions in a variety of fields, including state and local governments. advocacy, grants and civil society organizations; property management; Environmental Sciences; social assistance services; and health services. Some of the content area options available to students in the Urban Planning minor include: Planning-related courses must be at levels 300 and above, and may include URBDP courses with a prefix, as well as some courses in the CEP major and UW programs, including GEOG, L ARCH, ENVIR, ESRM, ECE and others. Planning-related courses are those that have significant content in the theory, methods, practices, and/or applications of urban design. Internships in planning agencies, companies or non-profit organizations can be counted as well as independent studies and/or internships or capstone courses with a strong focus on urban planning. The subject Urban Planning introduces students to the field of urban, regional and environmental planning. Because of its broad scope, the minor program can also serve as an effective introduction to graduate study in other social science disciplines, such as economics, geography, political science, and public policy. for the Bachelor`s minor in Urban Studies and Planning Urban and regional planning is an interdisciplinary field designed to improve the quality of life of people living in human settlements. Planners are involved in developing solutions to pressing societal problems such as urban sprawl, unemployment, homelessness, pollution and urban degradation.
They are involved in managing the nature and location of new developments, creating balanced transportation systems (including walking and cycling), promoting economic development for all residents, protecting the environment, developing affordable housing, and revitalizing urban neighbourhoods. The minor does not provide professional certification. Students must be approved before enrolling in study abroad or off-campus to be accepted into the URP minor. Credits are not accepted after a student begins studying abroad or off campus. Eligible programs must be offered by the UF International Centre or the College of Design, Construction and Planning. The URP baccalaureate coordinator must determine eligibility for study abroad or off-campus courses prior to attending the course. Credits accepted can vary between three and six, depending on the intensity and relevance of the program chosen. The minor in Urban and Regional Planning focuses on urban design issues and offers students the opportunity to learn about planning and development issues in our cities that we already face and will face in the coming decades. Students explore a range of ways to make our cities more equitable, inclusive, sustainable and liveable. The department`s courses provide important information about the social, political, economic, historical and cultural forces that shape urban spaces. In addition, these courses provide students with an excellent opportunity to prepare for graduate programs in related fields, including architecture, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, public policy, law, economics, public administration, public health, and social services.
The aim of the minor in Urban Studies is to familiarize students with topics related to the city and to provide an outlet for the general interest in urban studies that we have experienced throughout the university. The minor will allow students to understand urban challenges – in several areas – and the possible policy solutions to address them. The minor will also provide an understanding of issues related to urbanization, both historical and contemporary. The Urban Studies minor leverages the breadth of expertise available at university across colleges, schools, and departments to form a cohort of classes that provide foundational knowledge to students seeking a professional or academic career related to cities or urban populations. The minor subject therefore offers a marketable and academically challenging supplement to each BU bachelor`s major. The Urban and Regional Planning minor introduces you to the difficult and important aspects of creating, improving and maintaining communities and regions. The minor in Urban Planning provides complementary and fundamental education to students pursuing a graduate degree in urban planning, economics, geography, political science or public policy. The application must be made early so that advice on the choice of courses and special parameters of the study can be given. Students must have a C+GPA for admission to the minor and they must maintain a C+GPA in all courses for the minor.
