What States Are Legal for Sports Gambling

Efforts to legalize sports betting in Wyoming failed in early 2020. House Bill 225 would have allowed online sports betting only in the state, but it was rejected by lawmakers. The now-passed bill would have banned side betting on college sports and any sporting event with a Wyoming varsity team. Rhode Island is home to the eighth smallest population of any state, which therefore limits the benefits of long-term expansion of sports betting. The only mobile betting operator in Rhode Island is William Hill, owned by Caesars Entertainment. There used to be a personal registration requirement to place bets, but the state regulator has lifted this initiative. Since 2018, sports betting has been serving Rhode Island residents. In January 2022, Oregon switched from its own lottery app to DraftKings as a sole operator. A handful of Native American casinos operate sports betting.

Another attempt failed earlier this year after a campaign to get sports betting on the ballot in Florida failed to collect enough signatures. DraftKings and FanDuel were the main supporters of the campaign, contributing nearly $37 million combined. Georgian lawmakers ended their 2022 session the same way as their last two: with a failed last-minute attempt to legalize sports betting. The Tennessee Sports Gaming Act went into effect on May 25, 2019. The new law – which allows mobile sports betting nationwide without a fixed anchor – will come into effect on July 1, 2019. Sports betting must pay a license fee of $750,000 and there is a 20% tax rate. Subject to a narrow exception, Tennessee`s new law requires all licensed operators “to use only official league data for live betting.” According to the new law, all bettors must be at least 21 years old. There are still a few paths to legal betting in the coming years: Bets can be placed in person at state casinos and racetracks. Online sports betting has to work with a casino and involve most of the major players.

Pennsylvania was among a handful of states to accept legal sports betting in 2018 and has been among the nation`s largest markets since its digital launch in 2019. Nearly three years later, nearly 80% of U.S. states have legalized or legislated sports betting. It was one of the first states to record more than $200 million in monthly bets, joining the top 6 dollar states in 2022. The state of Aloha seems far from legalizing sports betting. As in most Southern states, politicians have a deep opposition to the game. Online and personal betting has been legal since May 2019, and online books were introduced the following August. Illegal: Sports betting is illegal in California, both online and in person. However, this could soon change, as several measures could be put to a vote this fall. Governor Pete Ricketts legalized sports betting and signed it into law on May 25, 2021, even though there are only personal bets. All betting on state college games and events, including player accessory betting, is prohibited. In January 2018, Rep. Bart Korman introduced a new bill that would have allowed already licensed river casinos and everyday fantasy companies to expand their offerings to include traditional sports betting.

Legislative hearings were held in Missouri before the Supreme Court decision, but the bill did not make it past committee stage. In January 2019, a number of new sports betting bills were introduced. Tribes in the state are pushing for a measure that would allow sports betting on tribal lands and some horse-drawn trams. It would allow betting as early as 2023, but only in person. All forms of sports betting remain illegal in North Dakota at the time of writing. Four bills were introduced on the issue during the 2021 legislature, but none could go beyond the House. Physical sports betting is legal in the first state, and the state`s three “racinos” began accepting bets in June 2018. Online betting is also legal, but has yet to launch in the state, and there doesn`t seem to be a clear timeline for when that might happen. Washington legalized sports betting on March 25, 2020 and took its first bet on September 9, 2021. Only certain tribal casinos can accept bets.

Sports betting is legal in Montana after it officially launched by the Montana Lottery in March 2020. The only legal means of sports betting in Montana are kiosks and the lottery website, with sports betting capped at $250 in person or $1,000 online. Oklahoma Gaming is dominated by Native American entities and most don`t seem inclined to accept sports betting until other major issues are resolved with the state government. Two tribes entered into sports betting deals in 2020, but these were later declared invalid, as part of a broader conflict between competing interests and the government. Sports betting has been legal in Ohio since December 2021, but has yet to begin. In 2018, the Supreme Court lifted the federal ban on sports betting, allowing state governments to set their own sports betting policies. Although it is now possible for sports betting to operate legally in the United States, no federal law has been passed legalizing the activity. Legislation to legalize online sports betting was passed in May 2022, but no launch date has yet been set.

Arizona passed its sports betting law in April 2021, allowing online betting and some of the first sports betting in the nation`s stadium. It is quickly becoming one of the most popular states to place a bet. Popular support is on the side of sports betting, but it`s unclear whether that`s enough to overcome the anti-gambling sentiment deeply entrenched in the Statehouse. New York passed a law in 2013 that legalized statewide sports betting, but the state didn`t open its first official bookmaker until July 2019. Mobile sports betting was introduced on January 8, 2022 and there are now nine live online sports betting in the Empire State. However, all betting on state college games and events, including betting on player accessories, is prohibited.
